The short answer
To convert a bank statement PDF to Excel, upload the statement to a table-aware converter and download the XLSX or CSV it produces. PDFxlsx reads the transaction table on every page, joins a table that continues across pages into one sheet, writes dates as real Excel dates and keeps amounts as numbers, so a SUM of the deposit column can be checked against the statement summary straight away. Scanned and photographed statements are read with OCR. Plans start at $49 a month for 50 conversions; Plus at $99 adds batch uploads and five seats for a bookkeeping team.
From the statement page to a sheet you can reconcile
A typical US checking statement prints a summary box, then a transaction list split into deposits, withdrawals and checks, often running over four or five pages. Here is what that becomes.
Electronic withdrawals
Deposits and additions
| Date | Description | Withdrawal | Deposit |
|---|---|---|---|
| 9/2/2026 | ACH PAYROLL SVC | 4812.40 | |
| 9/3/2026 | CARD 4471 OFFICE SUPPLY | 186.22 | |
| 9/4/2026 | REMOTE DEPOSIT | 9250.00 | |
| 9/5/2026 | ONLINE PMT ELECTRIC CO | 612.08 | |
| 9/8/2026 | WIRE IN CUSTOMER | 14000.00 | |
| =SUM() | 5610.70 | 23250.00 | |

What a bank statement converter has to get right
Copying a statement out of a PDF viewer usually lands every line in column A, or splits a description across two rows. These are the details that decide whether the file is usable for reconciliation.
Dates Excel can sort
Posting dates come out as real date values, not text, so you can sort by date, filter a range or pivot by month without a DATEVALUE workaround.
Amounts that add up
Withdrawals, deposits and balances are written as numbers. A SUM on each column can be compared with the summary box on page one.
Tables joined across pages
A transaction list that continues over five pages lands on one sheet. If you prefer, download it as one sheet per page instead.
Descriptions kept whole
Long ACH and card descriptions that wrap onto a second printed line stay in one cell, so vendor matching and lookups keep working.
Scans and phone photos
Paper statements scanned at the office or photographed by a client are read with OCR on paid plans, at no extra charge per page.
Excel or CSV
Download XLSX for review, or CSV when the next stop is an import template in your accounting software.
Who converts bank statements to Excel every month
Bookkeepers and CPA firms. Clients send twelve months of PDFs at year end, or a shoebox of scanned statements for catch-up work. The spreadsheet is where you categorize, spot missing months and build the schedule your tax preparer asks for.
Controllers at small and mid-size companies. Several operating accounts across two or three banks, and the bank feed in the ledger missed a period. The statement is the source of truth, so the spreadsheet comes from the statement.
Lenders, underwriters and analysts. Reviewing a borrower's deposits, NSF events and average daily balance is far quicker in a sheet than on screen.
Litigation support and forensic accountants. Tracing funds across hundreds of statement pages needs every row in one filterable table.

Compare the column sums with the beginning and ending balance and the totals in the summary box.
-
4
Download XLSX or CSV
Open it in Excel, or send the CSV on to your import template.
Ways to get a bank statement into Excel, compared honestly
Each route below works for someone. The right one depends on how many statements you handle and whether any of them are scans.
| Route | Good at | Where it breaks | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| CSV download from online banking | Exact data, no conversion needed | Usually only recent months; closed accounts and client-supplied PDFs have no download | Your own current accounts |
| Excel Get Data, From PDF | Built into Microsoft 365, no extra cost | Returns one query per page table, cannot read scans, needs Power Query cleanup | Occasional digital statements |
| Acrobat export to Excel | Keeps page layout closely | Reproduces the page, so headers, summaries and wrapped lines end up mixed into rows | Teams already paying for Acrobat |
| Retyping by hand | Full control | Hours per statement, transposed digits | A handful of lines |
| PDFxlsx | Transaction tables as clean rows, dates and amounts typed, OCR for scans, batch on Plus and Pro | Produces a spreadsheet, not a categorized ledger; no direct bank feed | Bookkeepers and finance teams with a monthly stack of PDFs |
If the statements are headed for QuickBooks Online rather than a spreadsheet, a bank statement to QuickBooks converter that writes a QBO file saves the import mapping step. For a plain CSV import into any ledger, convert here and choose CSV, or read the PDF to CSV converter page for the format details.

Bank statement to Excel questions
How do I convert a bank statement PDF to Excel?
Upload the PDF to a converter that reads tables, then download the Excel file. With PDFxlsx the transaction list comes back with date, description, withdrawal, deposit and balance in separate columns, and a table that runs over several pages is joined into one sheet. Check the column totals against the statement summary before you use the file.
Can Excel convert a bank statement PDF?
Partly. Excel for Microsoft 365 on Windows has Data, Get Data, From File, From PDF, which imports each table it finds as a separate query. It does not read scanned statements, and a transaction list that spans pages arrives as several tables you append in Power Query. For one digital statement it is fine; for a monthly stack it gets slow.
How do I convert a scanned bank statement to Excel?
A scanned statement is an image, so it needs OCR before any table can be read. Upload it the same way as a digital PDF; paid plans run OCR automatically on scanned pages. Scan at 300 dpi or higher if you can, and spot check a few amounts, since faint or skewed copies are where OCR errors appear. More on that on the OCR to Excel converter page.
How do I convert a bank statement to CSV?
Convert the PDF and pick CSV instead of XLSX at download. CSV is the format most accounting software import screens expect, with one header row and one transaction per line. If your ledger needs debits and credits in a single signed amount column, add that column in Excel first and then save as CSV.
Is it safe to upload bank statements to a converter?
It depends on the converter, so check where files go and how long they are kept. PDFxlsx transfers files over HTTPS, uses them only to produce your spreadsheet, and deletes uploaded documents within 24 hours. For client work, redact full account numbers first if your engagement letter or firm policy requires it.
Why do my amounts show as text after converting a PDF to Excel?
Usually because the converter copied the characters, including commas, dollar signs or trailing minus signs, instead of writing a number. Text amounts are left aligned and SUM ignores them. PDFxlsx writes amounts as numeric cells; if you already have a file with text amounts, the fix for negative numbers after PDF conversion covers the common cases.
Can I convert several months of statements at once?
Yes, on the Plus and Pro plans. Upload up to 20 statements in one batch and download the results together, which is how year-end and catch-up bookkeeping is normally handled. The batch PDF to Excel converter page explains how batches are counted against your plan.
Does it work with Chase, Bank of America and Wells Fargo statements?
The converter is not tied to a list of banks. It reads the table structure on the page, so it works on the transaction lists that large US banks and most credit unions print. Layouts that split deposits, withdrawals and checks into separate sections come out as separate tables you can stack. Try your own statement in the box at the top.
