PDF to Excel for Windows: Convert PDF to Excel on Windows 11 and 10
Excel for Windows can import a PDF through Data, Get Data, From PDF, but only on a Microsoft 365 plan, and it cannot read scanned files or messy layouts. PDFXLSX runs in any browser on Windows 11 or 10, with nothing to install. Drop a PDF on the right and it detects the tables, runs OCR on scans, and returns a clean XLSX or CSV.
Works on any Windows PC or laptop, no Microsoft 365 subscription required. Your first conversion is free and files are deleted after processing.

Excel for Windows can import PDFs, but only some of the time
Windows is the one platform where Excel has a built-in PDF import. On a recent version you go to Data, Get Data, From File, From PDF, point it at a document, and Power Query lets you pick which table to pull in. When the PDF is a clean, digital, single-table file, it works fine. The catch is that a lot of real business PDFs are not that tidy.
First, the From PDF command only ships with Microsoft 365 and recent perpetual versions on Windows. If you are on an older Office or you never subscribed, the option is not there. Second, it has no OCR, so a scanned statement or a photographed table imports as nothing or as garbled text. Third, multi-page documents and reports with several tables on a page often land in the wrong columns, and Power Query then needs manual cleanup before the numbers are usable.
PDFXLSX fills those gaps. It runs in Edge, Chrome, or Firefox on Windows 11 and Windows 10, with no Office subscription and nothing to install. Upload a PDF at the top of the page, let it find the rows and columns, and download a spreadsheet that opens straight in Excel. Scanned files go through OCR automatically, and complex layouts come out aligned instead of merged.
| Date | Description | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| 03/04 | Office supplies | 218.40 |
| 03/09 | Software subscription | 79.00 |
| 03/15 | Client lunch | 142.75 |
| 03/22 | Travel, airfare | 486.20 |
| 03/28 | Contractor payment | 1,950.00 |
Columns line up and numbers stay numeric, so you can total a column in Excel right away.
Ways to convert a PDF to Excel on Windows
An honest look at the options Windows users have, and where each one falls short.
| Method on Windows | Handles scans and complex tables? | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Excel From PDF (Power Query) | No | Needs Microsoft 365, no OCR, splits complex layouts, manual cleanup. |
| Copy and paste from a PDF reader | No | Loses columns; rows collapse into a single jumbled cell. |
| Adobe Acrobat for Windows | Partly | Exports to Excel, but it is a paid subscription and OCR is the paid tier. |
| Desktop PDF to Excel apps | Yes | Most are paid licenses and all need installing and updating. |
| PDFXLSX in your browser | Yes | Auto table detection, OCR on scans, no 365 and nothing to install. |
If your PDFs are always clean digital tables and you already pay for Microsoft 365, Excel's From PDF may be all you need. For scanned files, multi-table reports, or batches, a browser-based PDF to Excel converter is more reliable and does not depend on your Office plan.
Built to convert PDFs to Excel on Windows
Everything Excel's From PDF leaves out, in one place, on any Windows PC.
No Microsoft 365 needed
The From PDF command only works on a 365 plan or a recent perpetual Office. This runs in Edge, Chrome, or Firefox on any Windows 11 or Windows 10 machine, whether or not you pay for Office.
Finds the tables for you
The engine reads the table structure automatically and aligns rows and columns, so you skip the Power Query cleanup that complex layouts usually demand.
Scanned PDFs work too
Excel's import has no OCR, so it cannot read a scan. Here a scanned receipt or a photographed table runs through built-in OCR and comes out as editable spreadsheet rows.
Convert a batch at once
From PDF handles one file at a time. Upload several PDFs together and get them back as spreadsheets in one pass. See the batch PDF to Excel converter for high-volume work.
Numbers stay numbers
Amounts, dates, and account numbers come out properly typed rather than as text that breaks formulas. Sum a column or build a pivot the moment the file opens in Excel.
Private and secure
Business PDFs hold sensitive details. Files are encrypted in transit and at rest, processed in isolation, and deleted automatically once your spreadsheet is ready. Nothing is kept, shared, or reused after conversion.
How to convert a PDF to Excel on Windows
Three steps, no Office subscription required.
Open the page and upload
In Edge, Chrome, or Firefox on Windows 11 or 10, drag a PDF into the box at the top, or pick one from File Explorer. Digital and scanned PDFs up to 50MB are supported, single files or a batch.
It detects the tables
The converter finds the rows and columns, applies OCR when a page is a scan, and keeps numbers and dates in formats Excel understands. No Power Query steps and no manual cleanup of merged cells.
Download and open it
Download the XLSX or CSV and double click it. It opens in Excel for Windows with the table intact, ready to sort, filter, or hand to your accountant.
Who converts PDFs to Excel on Windows
Most US finance and operations work still runs on Windows, and the same gaps in Excel's From PDF import slow down the same teams every month.
-
Accountants and bookkeepers pulling figures off client PDFs that Power Query mangles. See the workflow built for accountants and bookkeepers.
-
Finance and operations teams on Windows laptops without a 365 license, who still need numbers off statements and reports. See PDF to Excel for finance teams.
-
Small business owners on a Windows PC turning vendor invoices, receipts, and bank statements into a spreadsheet for their books or their CPA.
-
Anyone whose From PDF import failed on a scanned file or a multi-table report and needs a path that actually returns clean rows.
On a Mac or iPhone instead?
Excel for Mac never got the From PDF command at all, and the Excel app on iPhone and iPad cannot import a PDF either. The same browser converter works on all of them, so your method does not change when your device does.

PDF to Excel on Windows: common questions
Open this page in Edge, Chrome, or Firefox on Windows 11 or 10, drag your PDF into the converter at the top, and download the Excel file in a few seconds. There is nothing to install and no Microsoft 365 needed. The tool detects the tables, applies OCR to scans, and produces an XLSX or CSV that opens in Excel for Windows.
Sometimes. Excel for Windows can import a digital PDF through Data, Get Data, From File, From PDF, but only on Microsoft 365 or a recent perpetual version, and it has no OCR for scans. Complex or multi-table layouts often import into the wrong columns. For those files, upload the PDF here and download a clean XLSX instead.
The steps are the same on Windows 10 as on Windows 11. Open the converter in your browser, upload the PDF, and download the spreadsheet. You do not need a specific Windows 10 app or a Microsoft 365 plan, since the conversion happens in the browser. Scanned and digital PDFs both work, and the file opens in any version of Excel.
The best fit depends on your files. For clean digital tables and a 365 plan, Excel's own From PDF is fine. For scanned documents, multi-table reports, batches, or PCs without Office, a browser-based converter is more reliable. PDFXLSX auto-detects tables, runs OCR, keeps numbers numeric, and needs no install or subscription.
Yes, but not with Excel's built-in import, which has no OCR and cannot read an image-only PDF. This converter runs OCR on scanned and photographed documents, so a scanned statement or receipt still comes out as editable spreadsheet rows. Upload the scan at the top of the page and download the Excel file once it finishes reading the text.
It is safe here because files are encrypted in transit and at rest, processed in an isolated environment, and deleted automatically once the conversion finishes. Business documents hold sensitive details, so uploads are never stored long term, shared, or reused. If you compare converters, check that each one states a clear file deletion policy.
