The short answer

OmniPage Ultimate costs $499 and OmniPage Standard $149, once per Windows PC, and both export scans to Word and Excel. It is a sound buy for one Windows user who scans and edits documents offline. When several people, some on Mac, need scanned financial documents as clean Excel tables, PDFxlsx detects each table, joins it across pages, writes numbers as numbers and runs in the browser, from $49 a month or $588 a year for 5 seats.

What the OmniPage Ultimate spec sheet asks of your office

Tungsten sells OmniPage Ultimate 19.2 and Standard 18.0. The Ultimate specification still lists Windows XP SP3, Internet Explorer 8 and a DVD drive next to Windows 10 and 11, and says plainly that OmniPage is Windows only and not Mac compatible.

That is fine on a dedicated scanning PC. It gets awkward when the people who need the Excel files work on MacBooks, from home, or on locked down laptops where IT will not install desktop software.

The pile OmniPage is usually bought for: invoices and statements that have to end up as rows someone can total.

OmniPage editions and prices in the US store

Desktop licenses are one time purchases for one PC with a 30 day money back guarantee. The trial is limited to offices scanning under 1,000 pages a week; above that Tungsten steers you to Server or the SDK. Full math by team size is in our OmniPage Ultimate price breakdown.

OCR that rebuilds the page versus OCR that rebuilds the table

OmniPage is built to reproduce a document: columns, fonts, headers and footers, so the Word or Excel file looks like the paper. For an invoice that is often the wrong goal. Accounting needs one header, one row per line item and quantities and amounts stored as numbers.

Year one cost for one person and for a five person office

For a single Windows user, Starter is cheaper in year one, but OmniPage Ultimate at $499 once costs less than Starter within two years. We say that plainly. For five people the order flips: five Ultimate licenses are $2,495 before anyone converts a page, and Plus covers 5 seats for $588 a year.

Neither number includes cleanup. Ten minutes of fixing per converted statement across 100 files a month is over 16 hours of staff time, which is why you should time both tools on your own scans.

OmniPage vs PDFxlsx for scanned PDF to Excel

OmniPage is a broader OCR product than ours. Rows where it is the better pick are in bold.

Who moves the Excel part of OmniPage to the browser

Offices retiring the old scanning PC

The OmniPage box under the front desk is due for replacement. The new laptops are Macs or locked down by IT.

Bookkeepers with scanned statements

Client statements arrive as scans. Bank statement PDF to Excel keeps dates and signed amounts.

AP clerks keying invoice lines

Line items from paper invoices into one sheet with the invoice PDF to Excel converter.

Month end folders

Instead of a watched folder on one PC, the batch PDF to Excel converter takes 20 files at a time from anyone on the team.

How to test OmniPage and PDFxlsx on the same scans

  1. 1

Pull five files you actually convert

A faxed statement, a skewed vendor invoice, a report whose table runs onto page two.

  2. 2

Run the OmniPage trial and this page

Export each file to XLSX in OmniPage and convert the same file in the box at the top.

  3. 3

Put SUM under the amount column

If it totals without retyping, deleting header rows or Text to Columns, that export is usable.

  4. 4

    Time the cleanup and multiply

Minutes per file times files per month is the number that decides which tool costs less.

Most of your files are scans? The scanned PDF to Excel guide covers resolution and skew before you convert. OmniPage alternative questions

For a desktop OCR suite like OmniPage, the usual alternatives are ABBYY FineReader PDF and Readiris, and Adobe Acrobat Pro if you also edit PDFs. If what you need from OmniPage is scanned statements, invoices or reports as Excel tables, a browser converter such as PDFxlsx detects each table, joins it across pages and works for a whole team without installs.

Tungsten Automation lists OmniPage Ultimate at $499 and OmniPage Standard at $149 in its US store, as one time desktop licenses for one Windows PC. Individual licenses bought there carry a 30 day money back guarantee. OmniPage Server and the Capture SDK are sold through an evaluation request with no public price.

Yes. OmniPage is sold by Tungsten Automation, the new name of Kofax, which bought Nuance's document imaging business. The store sells OmniPage Ultimate 19.2 and OmniPage Standard 18.0, and the Ultimate specification still lists Windows XP SP3, Internet Explorer 8 and a DVD drive alongside Windows 10 and 11.

Yes. Both OmniPage Standard and Ultimate list XLS and XLSX among their Microsoft Office output formats, and Tungsten lists improved table conversion in both editions. Test it on your own scans and check whether each table lands as clean rows with numbers you can total, especially across page breaks.

No. Tungsten states that OmniPage is only available for Windows and is not Mac compatible. Mac users who need scanned PDFs in Excel can use Readiris or ABBYY FineReader for Mac on the desktop, or a browser converter such as PDFxlsx, which runs the same way on Mac, Windows and Chromebook.

Standard ($149) converts scans and PDFs to Office formats, including Excel, with built in workflows. Ultimate ($499) adds batch processing from watched folders and email, scheduled jobs, scans from network copiers, form processing, PDF security and better camera image accuracy, and recognizes over 120 languages. Table conversion is the same in both. Only Ultimate has a free trial.

The desktop editions do not. Tungsten points high volume users, past about 1,000 pages a week, to OmniPage Server, which comes with an API, or the OmniPage Capture SDK for developers, both quoted after an evaluation request. PDFxlsx Pro at $199 a month includes a REST API that returns the same workbook as the browser converter.

For one person, OmniPage Ultimate at $499 once is cheaper than PDFxlsx Starter at $288 a year after about two years. For five people, five OmniPage Ultimate licenses cost $2,495, while Plus covers 5 seats for $588 a year. Time spent cleaning OCR output into usable tables usually matters more than either price.
